I want to harp on a bit about scales and muscle memory. Every good muso goes through the hard yard of playing scales ad verbatim.( ad nauseum too). It can be boring or a dynamic fun exercise, but IMHO it must be done to the point where it becomes a muscle memory. Its the only way to get smooth and fluid at long distant soloing. It allows the MUSE to surface and thats when truly creative soloing occurs on the fly.
I have put many hours (over the past 41 years) into scale practice-just rambling up and down the major and minor scales applying different intervals to a metronome. REALLY listening to those intervals. And I still do it to this day, and I will continue to 'til I die! I really think I'm making progress.
I cant stress this enough. Learn to walk before you try to run. 🌻
Yes it is. Fully agree.....
Amen, Craig. I have seen the results of the MUSE arising from the space created when I don't have to think about my scales or patterns as much, and every time I am amazed.
Now I must confess that I have not applied near as much as I should to that routine as I did when I started bass and then guitar. Mmmph, I could'a been a contender! But nevermind woulda, coulda, shoulda- I am all the better for what scales and patterns with a METRONOME, and against backing tracks. I think I'm the bookend to your point of patterns when I emphasize that its all for naught if you do not have the sense of time and rhythm ingrained as the canvas upon which express our notes.
Amen and Hallelujah!
Ya man, we have to put in enough time to get the fingers to go where they need to go.
You are absolutely right - we need to pay attention to the intervals as well!
I need to do a video on this...

You ABSOLUTELY should. There would be so many potential "AHA!" moments.
