I am working on Stormy Monday, and know the key is G.
Many of the chords are 9ths, so does this mean lead lines taken from the Dorian Scale would work well here? I have been trying to outline the changes, using G Major, A minor and D Dorian runs. Of course it really doesn't follow the melody line from the song, but I am trying to work out lead lines... Any Help Robert?
Hey Bluesluvr! No, when the chord is a 9th chord, it's going to be Mixolydian mode. However, you can use the minor pentatonic too.
Can you copy and paste the chords? Is it from my backing track version of the song?
Here's how to look at these types of chords - the THREE BIG ONES:
- Major 7 (Maj7) - Major scale (Ionian)
- Minor 7 (m7) - Aeolian (or Dorian will often work too)
- 7 (means Dominant) - Mixolydian
This is extremely important to understand for everyone. Maybe this is a good topic for the next live stream?
The numbers don't change the function of the chords. Look at these as the same type of chord:
- Major 7/9/11/13
- Minor 7/9/11/13
- Dominant 7/9/11/13
I should explain these numbers in a video! It's very simple - just keep stacking 3rds.
For example:
- G Maj9 (G Ionian)
- Fm7 (F Aeolian/Dorian
- B13 (B Mixolydian)
Let me know if you have any questions about this.
