Ivan inquired as to all my busy-ness on the Practice Log and I thought it time I post something as a marker in my progress. Elvis' "That's Alright" is an incredible moment in the convergence of music styles creating a block in the foundation of Rock. I love this song and while it is short and sounds simple, the nuances continue to escape my grasp. Elvis plays the acoustic rhythm and Scotty Moore plays a modified Travis style for an accompaniment and solo break that pushes country into the rock solo repertoire.
So here's my work in progress, playing Elvis and Scotty's parts, backed by GB drummer. My biggest challenge is that I'm trying to play Scotty's finger style ideas in hybrid picking. I can play Scotty's part quite well, much tighter when its all fingers, but part of the exercise for me is to get this up to hybrid which requires a different touch and combination of fingers for the treble strings.
Sweet. It's not fair to hide these cakes!!!!!.
I love it. Congratulations.
Boy am I glad I asked what was going on in that shed of yours. You caught me off guard. I wasn't expecting that.....for some reason I was thinking funk. But the end result is just what I would expect. Creative, original and downright great playing.
Awesome job Clayton.....let that imagination of yours take your playing to wherever it wants to go. Always fun to listen (and learn) from your work!
Fellas, always a pleasure to share. Glad you enjoyed the efforts!
Esteban, recording is always a cake, lots of layers to work through: Arranging, performing (lots of takes), listening, performing, and then the humility to post, and moving forward with the next project. It can be difficult for me to post because I always want to make it better. But it is sharing that makes me more daring as a performer. I have to take chances to learn and grow- THAT is the Icing on the Cake! Fortunately, I have a good group of friends here that let me demonstrate how I am trying, taking chances, working out notes and ideas. That's Alright!
Ivan, I think my nickname should be Curveball. This will result in a Funkier C down the road. Music is art expressed in time and all work on that canvas is helpful to the craft. The hybrid work will payoff in so many genres: Chicken Pick'n, Blues (love SRV's hybrid picking), Funk, Rock and Jazz. And yep, it's there on LaGrange and countless other tunes. My real drummer likes materials and wants to work on performing this and some other early Elvis such as Baby Lets Play House and Mystery Train.
