I have seen conflicting info on positions, as in playing scales in 1st, 2nd or 3rd positions, etc.  Any clear explanation of what these are on the neck, and how they are constituted?

Thanks much

Thanks. I am actually interested in full scales in different neck positions and how they are categorized. I am working with a jazz book called Soloing over the changes, where I saw mention of playing a C major scale starting on the 8th fret, labeling it as the 7th position. So, what would be the other 6 positions? Does this make any sense?
