Joe, keep on tapping your foot.
It takes a while to get used to it - my own experience! - ,but you will see that your rhythm feeling will improve.
Keep it up! Birgit
Thanks
Hope all is well in your neck of the woods.
Thanks for posting Joe! Yeah you are on the right track. Start playing some simple lines with a backing track or even just a metronome - it will really help you over time.
Today 1 Feb 2021
Really need to commit to this log so I started out on YL 18 blues solo
This was my 2nd take on the first 5 bars. My timing in the beginning was OK, but in the end the timing needs to get better. 120 bpm
I'll continue with the rest of the bars on this thread as I progress.
Joe, I’m also just learning this lick. What a coincidence!
Before you go on practicing I recommend that you should practice with a metronome. That’s the lesson I learned from Robert and Clayton! And it’s now firmly anchored in my mind.
It really really helps. And the triplet in bar 3 is tricky because the first stroke of the triplet is omitted.
Have fun while practicing, Birgit
(And it's really fun to practice!)

Yes, it has to be fun, that's for sure. That lick is actually a very fun lick to learn. I'm going to learn it as fast as possible and want to play the Em chord with it.
Post your take on it also.
OK, I got YL-18 down to where it sounds like music. Got it at 120 bpm and with drums. My timing really improved since my first recording. So now, I tackle another YL lesson.
What does YL stand for ?
Nicely done!
Nicely done!
Thanks jestme
I quite didn't get the exact feel that Robert has on it, but then again, after practicing it many times I wanted to really just stay in time and add a touch on how I felt like playing it. Why... well it helps me remember the lick for the future use in something I may create thanks to Robert.
Joe, speaking from my own experience, from all what I’ve learned so far here at MGA:
Getting the feeling for the song and staying in time, I really recommend to work with a metronome and to begin at a slower tempo. I think it’s really important having time to focus on all the details and nuances and working on timing.
Then, if you feel comfortable, you can increase the tempo.
And for this tune: Robert plays the lick at 90 bpm. So if you want to get his feeling, as you mentioned, you could play it at the same tempo.
I also did the YL18 lick at 90 bpm. And I’m still working on it for refinement. A lot to do but really fun.
And Joe, it‘s always a great pleasure for me that you share your practice with us 😊.
Keep on playing, Birgit
February 15, 2021
Well, hopefully I can stick with a program once again. Cycling for me is a motivation to get out of the house, but its still winter here and the winds will be strong till the end of March.
So today I'm starting: Get Close Solo
It's an older course/lesson from Robert's Dolphin Street era.
1. practice 2 bars
side notes
first I'd like to say I bought a bass guitar and a complete beginner, why I'm mentioning that is because I'm teaching myself to PLAY BASS, ( that's not good at all ) I bought the bass to play my songs and other people's songs. But by playing bass, I mean it like this... I want to be connected at to the : why's, where's , when, and how's. By thinking about this, when I'm actually playing music ( that's why I bought the bass) it has given me a better roadmap to playing songs on the bass.
so on Get Close Solo I've decided to slow it down and think first along with the above thoughts
1. relaxation ( total )
2. position of guitar
3. feel of the timing, beat, rhythm
4. naming the notes as I play ( this is a challenge )
5. understanding the relationship of picking up and down and economy picking how it affects the
actual rhythm of my playing
5.5 not looking at the fretboard while playing
6. just enjoy myself
7. most importantly, start and finish the lesson
stay tune
I'll post my progress
Joe, that’s a message! Your practice program is well thought through 😊. Hold on! All it’s worth it.
Keep on learning and playing, Birgit
June 25, 2022
I just renewed my subscription to MGA. Usually from April to the end of August I'm out cycling and camping here in this country. So I'm not that active on the forum and my practice log seems to have turned into petrified wood. LOL
June 25
Again started with : T-Bone Scuffle
Goal is to a least play : 4 bars per practice session
6-25 : Introduction video
Performance video
The Melody practiced the first 4 bars w/tab ( just remembering the 4 bars )
Time practicing: about 60 minutes
My goal was the above. I did it !
June 26, 2022 Sunday
Time started: 9 AM
Time finished: 10 AM
Lesson: T-Bone Scuffle
Goal today is to play : the first 8 bars that are on the PDF tab sheet
Also, most importantly is to remember the first 8 bars.
I'm not really playing in rhythm yet, which I think I better start soon. Just getting the right up and down picking of the right hand.
Into my 2nd day of this. Now, just have to keep my schedule and goal going.
When I get the first 12 bars down, I'll record it and post my progress of this tune.
* the hardest part is focusing for one hour of repeating and repeating, but with a little escape, I manage to hang in there and did what I started out to do.
Todays goal was success. 8 bars to play and remember.
June 28, 2022 Tuesday
Start: 8:45 am
Finish 10:00 am
Lesson T-Bone Scuffle
Goal today is to play the first 14 bars.
Increase my speed.
Learn the notes. ( didn't have much time on that )
- watch Introduction video
- watch Performance video
- focus more on timing
- focus on right hand picking strokes
- set up Focusrite to record ( did not record as of posting )
Results for today's practice were overall what I wanted to accomplish. Rhythm needs much more practice, but with more time and playing along with the video, I'll get the results I'm striving for.
July 5, 2022
Time: 1:30 PM finished at 2:30 PM
Today's Goal
Practice the first 14 bars
Try to remember all 14 bars ( wasn't too successful on that today )
Overall the practice is starting to feel better.
Did not record today
