Hi Robert,
great online-session with David.
And that's my question: Did you practise this session in realtime online?
What technical inventory (DAW, online JAM App etc.) have you been using to accomplish this?
It would like to hear some more details about this online- setup.
That's a very interesting task I think.
Thanks very much.
Kessi
Hey, thanks Kessi.
No it's all done separately in our own time. It's an illusion (Dan knows more).
David sent me the backing track, and a video of him soloing over it, as well as him playing chords over my solo section. I then recorded myself playing some chords behind his solo. Then I recorded another video of myself recording my solo.
All I needed to do for my solo was to record it on my DAW over and over again, with the video camera rolling, until I was happy enough (never happens though) with my solo.
At that point, I have the video and the audio recorded separately. My video camera picks up a lower quality audio input too, so I used that to sync my better audio with the camera's audio in my video editor. Then I remove the video camera audio and it's all done. It's very simple to do all this.
- Backing track imported into my DAW
- Video filming me playing - guitar recorded in DAW on separate track
- Sync exported & mixed DAW audio with video
- Export the video and upload to youtube
All I needed to do for my solo was to record it on my DAW over and over again, with the video camera rolling, until I was happy enough (never happens though) with my solo.
This is a good topic and enlightening response.
Robert, I think you once told me that the latency of the internet makes real time remote audio jamming next to impossible.
Yeah real-time jamming over the internet is not possible, unless you use some special software and have an excellent internet connection. I have heard of such software, but I have never tried it myself. I have my doubts...
Hey Robert,
That 3rd barre of your solo sounds a lot like "Black Dog" by Zeppelin. Was that intended or just a coincidence? Great solo BTW.

Thanks, glad you noticed! It was intentional... I like to "quote" other melodies in my solos sometimes. It's fun, and I'm glad when someone notices. Call them "easter eggs" if you like. There are more in some of my lessons... let me know if you find any others!
