Muddy Waters once said to Hubert Sumlin, "I dont care how you can play, how fast you are, how good you are, you aint good enough unless you got the SOUL!" 😎
JB to Bobby, "Whatever it is, its got to be Funky!"
Tell you Craig, I've just delved back into 60's soul guitarists like Steve Cropper, Cornell Dupree, Bobby Womack, and all that Stax/Muscle Shoals sound. I've been following the Curtis Mayfield and Keith Richards down their soul based styles as well. Whew, Curtis is a wellspring of funky soul greatness. So much to learn and more importantly, as Muddy said, get the SOUL feel.
And as Cardinal Zinn to the Pontiff, "But, your Eminence, who knew the Holy Grail wasn't dishwasher safe?!"

Doesnt just listening to the old style bring out in oneself something unique. It certainly does for me. Those older folk certainly create the envelope not only push it!!
I think maybe us older folks here are just more in tune with the music of "our generation" that we really haven't out grown, and shouldn't. 😀

Well it is closer to the roots .
That truly soul, R&B, Gospel sound is so organic to us "old souls." Sweet little sophistications in harmony derived from natural rhythms.
I do scratch my head as to what is now called R&B. And the lack of any soul in popular music. You kids get off of my lawn!

Yes the youngsters today dont seem to be able to reach those depths of the older folk who took there misery and suffering and transmuted it into golden harmony!
