So, I'm off to the mountains for a few days! Running on Saturday night, and my wife and daughter will be in a sweet little town called Fernie, when they aren't following the race. We go back home on Monday.

I competing with a team, running the ultra marathon relay Sinister 7. I'm on the toughest of all legs, leg 6. That's usually not a big deal, however I have developed an issue with a hip muscle. I thought it was minor but it may be worse than I thought... oh well, I should know how bad it is after running 3.5 hours ... 🙂 I'm bringing poles, which should help a bit. When the hip gets bad, I have trouble lifting my left leg.

Leg 6 - Crowsnest + Seven Sisters

Distance: 31.9km

Gain: 1400m

Loss: 1400m

Max Elevation: 2292m

CPs*: CP6a - 8km/ CP6b - 17km/ CP6c - 24.5km

Difficulty: 7/7

Trail Type: Double track, single track, high alpine, dirt road

Est Time: 3.5 to 7 hours

Must Start: 05:30 hrs (Sunday)

Cutoff: 11:30 hrs (Sunday)

This Leg will try the toughest of racers. This route takes runners through some of the most remote terrain on the course as they make their way to the evil climb north of Seven Sisters Mountain. While catching your breath at the highest point on the course, don't forget to check out some of the larger mountains in the area: Crowsnest to the south as well as Tornado and Gould Dome to the north. There is no time for rest as runners drop to the west and make their way around the base of Crowsnest Mountain along trails and numerous drainages. Sure footing is key on this section as you round the southern edge of the mountain and arrive back at the McGillivray staging area to begin the final leg of the race.

That's crazy!! I've been running 5 miles four day a week and that kicks my butt. Not only are you a great guitar player you're also in fantastic shape!!

Good luck Robert! I hope your hip holds out.

Sounds like challenging leg......but I'd rather be in Fernie.

Good luck Robert!

I remember another team run in mountains about 2 years ago but I thought that was not a trail run.  You Ultra folks are incredible athletes with a mindset unique.  I think I'm with Ivan- Fernie sounds like the place to be.

Good luck with the hip, don't lose the horse for want of a shoe (hip).  Be careful and have fun.

So I Googled Fernie and yeah that's where I would prefer to be as well!

Good luck with the race. Hope you are able to complete it safely without injury!

Well, I survived this. Barely! I have some seriously annoying hip muscle issues, which made this really hard and painful. I was nowhere near my 3:30 goal time. I finished in 4:06 (lost 3 minutes after taking a wrong turn as well).

Still, it was a great experience overall. I'm now scheduled for physiotherapy, and I hope can get over what is causing these muscle issues. I've had it for a long time, but these last 2 weeks, it just got really quite bad.

Here you can see the Seven Sisters on the right, and the larger Crowsnest mountain on the left, which is the one you see behind me on the video.

Hey Robert.

Too bad about your hip. I'm sure some rest and physio will have you back up and running (excuse the pun) in no time. Sit back and play some blues for a few days....that'll help too.

Glad to have you back!

That's an average of 12 minutes per mile. Great job!

That photo of the Crownset and Sisters looks like an epic Bierstadt painting.  You have some sweet geography in the NW.

Of course the character to assault and complete this run is the celebration, your time is but a reflection of your obstacles and perserverance.  Cheers for being one of the few who "Do!"

Sending positive waves on that hip issue.  I hope it did not sieze up the day after.

Yeah, it was kind of epic, but I sure got hurt in the process. I will not do it again - been there, done that.

I'm on physiotherapy treatment for a few weeks now.
