Mr. UPS dropped off a Zoom H1 Digital Recorder and I took it for a a quick test this afternoon down in Deep C Studios. Small, simple and easy to set up and use. Now much of the guitar was compressed through ye olde Wah pedal, and the volume down on the amplifier but the concept was to set the recorder on a table next to me and hit the red button. Files are saved as Wav or MP3 and transferrable via usb or sd card. I am happy with this acquisition for $85 USD.
So, since I have not submitted an organized recording lately, here's me semi-aimlessly wanking away at the guitar for 8 minutes of new toy time. It's nothing structured, just rummaging through some riffs and segments of materials without a metronome or backing track.
Hi Clayton
I like to record myself straight into my PC! I would use it for recording the band in a Practice room!
Chuck
Hey Clayton. That was 8minutes of great playing. Really showcases how that imagination of yours really works on the fly.
Your funky drummer practice sounds like it's paying off. Nice funky feel all the way through. The name of the song escapes me but the Hendrix tune towards the end, around the 6 min mark really caught my attention. One of my JH favourites. Like the way you just just blended it in the feel.....very smooooth my friend.
Oh, by the way. Nice new toy you got there. Sounds like your test run was a success. Picked up the sound perfectly. The tone and wah effect was the icing on the cake.
Great playing bud. Glad to hear you're back to work in Deep C Studios!
Both of you fellas are right on the mark about this Test. Chuck, we have a macbook pro running GB at funky drummer practice space, and no less than 6 mics grabbing the sound off drums and room (plus a DI from back of the Bass amp). But sometimes the "Record" button is not hit because I have a tendency to start playing with whatever flows and next thing you know its 15 minutes of lost jamming and exploration. THUS- I wanted to have a pocket recorder with good mics that I can pop on the shelf and download materials with ease. This fit the bill (though I wish it had Bluetooth like my phone) and the price point is excellent. I can record 3 hours on the 2GB micro sd card, and expand up to 32G sd card.
Ivan, thanks so much for appreciating the flow of consciousness, timing and phrasing. Absolutely right about how much the Funky Drummer Practice has improved my playing and especially "on the fly." THAT is exactly what I'm aiming for- create and explore in the moment. The 6 minute mark is JH Band of Gypsies "Who Knows" which RR did a lesson on that bend and catch riff. Way back I did a kitchen acoustic recording on the opening layering bass and guitar sections right into the Macbook microphone to GB.
There's a lot of my recent Billy Gibbons, EC and some JH studies reflected in the riffing, along with my brain just meandering and finding notes and combinations. I had half a mind to post a couple "here's me practicing, exploring, working through the bad notes and building riffs" recording to encourage others- perhaps I'll dig out a Funky Drummer clip and/or get something new a practice with the Zoom and share here at MGA if players are interested hearing in the Good, Bad and Not So Pretty part of the process.
1 week of Rehab down, 3 weeks to go. Keep on playing what you feel.
Yeah that is great!
I have a Zoom H1 too, and it's very handy for quick recordings. Nice sound.
Truth be told, I remember your satisfaction with using the Zoom H1, and, along with some awesome guitar instruction, I am better off today! Thanks, RR.
Amazon and B&H Photo had Blue or White H1's on sale for $80.
The playing was really cool. Love the vibe you create.
I can't believe how well the recording sounded. Not a bad solution for $80.
