Sometimes it's just easy to record with a built-in mic on your iPad, computer, phone, or even a zoom digital recorder.
Since we seem to be a bit "shy"on members submitting practice or performance, I wanted to demonstrate how easily you can record with just a built-in mic. The point is to record, record, record. It will make you a better musician and sharing will inspire fellow players here.
Here's a set of varied recordings done on my iPad. Some were multitracked, but everything was recorded using just a built-in mic either on my porch, couch, or kitchen. The kitchen had good natural reverb, and the porch session of St James went into the evening so you can hear crickets on the solo track.
I used the simple version of GarageBand on my iPad, but you can keep it simple and just hit the red button and start playing. Let's go Jam, Members!!!
Mojo working lesson acoustic
Hendrix chord embellishments & Trower Daydream
St James Infirmary back porch acoustic
All of these recordings are derived from lessons at MGA.
Clayton, that sounds great.
I can’t believe that you’ve done the recordings on your iPad just using a built-in mic !!! I haven’t expected it like this.
Thank you for giving us these informations, also on different types of reverb. I learned something new again.
And thanks for the practice samples. Really good.

It's that easy to record a session and build your skills. We get caught up in tech seeking studio quality but a lot of times having quick access to capture the moment and the vibe is just the ticket. Recording technology should set us free to be artists, not necessarily bind our time in "getting it best."
Grab your phone recorder, ipad, tablet, Zoom H1 or, one of my faves, Digitech Trio Plus looper and make some music, lots of music, and keep recording!
Now thats what Im talkin,' 'bout!
Your soulful renditions are captured simply and beautifully!
I do declare the St James rendition reminds me of the sweet bayou on a hot summers night, drinkin' a Gin Rickey. (Not that Ive ever been there or drank a Rickey!)
Craig, I recorded that St James after a long day of cycling back roads of West Virginia just cooling my heels on a porch swing on a late summer everning. St James was recorded using a Taylor GS Mini ($450 US with a firm padded gig bag). I found one with a good feel and sound, and it's so portable. Using a built in mic let me capture the moment and the vibe.
No alligators here in Maryland, but I can sure 'nuff pour you a bourbon to sip if you drop by.
