Well the sun's been shining so I've been making hay ...

No time for practicing music except today it's raining so ...

I was digging through my archives and found a song titled

'Nowhere To Run'  (89') ... i wrote it about 30 years ago

and recorded a demo on an old four track cassette portastudio 144 in 1989.

(which I need another to play my old demo tapes)

The pitch is a little off as per 4 track motors, tape stretch etc

Anyhoo, this was me singing'  along with distorted acoustic guitar, bass and drum machine.

Key of A with a twist ... turn arounds F & E ... chorus F G A

The original demo is kind of a blues shuffle ala ZZ Top

So get your Billy Gibbons licks/chops out and play along.

I want to rerecord this ... may start today.

Please let me know if you feel it's a worthwhile endeavour,

or should I just keep it on the shelf !?

... ahhh hell, I'll probably do it anyway ... it's good practice for me too.

Worked on new version of Nowhere To Run (2017) today from 6 am to 6 pm and got this new rough version up without vocals. I'd like to hear any feedback and if anyone tries to add licks and/or solos.

Key of Am ... F Em turn around ... F G Am chorus ...

ZZ Top style shuffle @137 bpm

I am interested to hear '89 back to the future of '17.  Make some noise!

And the recent coverage of the 50th Anniversary of the Sgt Pepper release discussed the 4 track recording deck used for the album.

Hey Clayton,

In the above posts the Highlighted  titles will download the mp3 files if you click on them. There's the 89' version and rough sketch of the 17' version which i am tweaking right now before i put the vocals on. I'll add the versions as it progresses ... 13 hours in so far of an average 40 hours before I'm usually happy with a final creation. ( even after that I usually hear things I'd care to change but just say enough is enough)

My four track, using regular cassettes with 1/4" tape is what the Boss used for his album Nebraska

The two J37 four track machines used on Sgt. Pepper album were different animals using 1" tape, Ultimately,  you have the same issues when it comes to bouncing to get multitrack stereo mixing, so you have to plan your  layering and be happy with what you have down because once you bounce tracks there's no editing unless you go back two, three or more steps.

Ok here's even a tighter cleaner mix after 20 hours from start to finish. I still need to record vocals and squeeze in any fills/leads that any of you may come up with. That's where the other 20 hours come in ...

Nowhere To Run (2017b Tight Mix 060317)

thanX Robert and Woody.

Great work Tawmy. I'm liking that. Definitely add vocals and fills. Looking forward to the finished product.

Thanks Ivan,

I am waiting to see if anyone here from MGA comes up with anything as far as fill licks or a solo go. My next options are a few of my local shredder buds that i have to keep the reigns on as they sometimes overplay. It just needs some tasty Billy Gibbons style guitar parts here and there. I will put the vocals down in the next few days and then wait and see ... I may have to learn some BG style guitar myself. I am in no hurry as it has sat in 'the can' for thirty years already.

i pulled it out to play with here as it's one of my many bluesy tunes that just never got past a rough demo.

i hope it inspires someone.

T,

I wanna get on this and try my hand at some Rev Gibbons riff flavors but its been a busy outdoor weekend. Bike riding, bike maintenance, more bike riding.   2017 Tight sounds right, but it would be best to have vocals down else a stab at the riffs and fills would step all over the lyrics.

Thanks Clayton,

Due to a pulled muscle i could not work the last three days or ride any of my motorbikes, and definately not my pedal bike. Therefore i got a lot done in my studio.

i have the new vocals up to and including the first chorus. I am happy with the sound so far, and the new keyboards fit perfectly even though i added them before the vocals. Intuition i suppose. I wasn't sure if i could still do the Tom Waits style vocals but i did and i can still talk. There are 3 part harmonies on the choruses, so it may take me a couple of days to finish all the vox.

the 89' version (<- click to download) has the vocals so you can play along if you're impatient. (It's slightly out of tune)

I am eager to hear any and all of your ideas, so i am motivated to get this done asap.

Ok it's ready for any of your licks/fills/solos ... after 32 hours this is where it's at with roughed in vocals (going to rerecord vocals in the next week with new Sennheiser e945 i am buying tomorrow) ...click here to download -> Nowhere To Run

Key of Am ... F Em turn around ... F G Am chorus ...

ZZ Top style shuffle @137 bpm

I'm looking forward to hearing what some of you come up with on this one. I have a few more old blues pieces that I want to dust off and rework as well. So if you'd like some extracurricular activity or a mild distraction from your lessons here that'll challenge and inspire some original creativity, then keep an eye on the recordings and jams section of the MGA forum.

Tawmy... Just a suggestion... I'm only speaking for myself but I'm thinking it might be easier for those that want to have a listen, if you were to put the file on Dropbox  or SoundCloud or some other file sharing site. Just a thought... Then folks can just click on the link and listen. They should also be able to download from those sites it they choose to. Both sites have free accounts too... just an idea for you to consider.

Hello Jestme,

Thanks for the input. The instant download links not work for you ? I could try your suggestions but that might be redundant. My song files are virus free although hopefully not viral immune. I will take the suggestion into consideration if there are others that feel the same and I discuss it with 'the man'. I have my own site where most of my songs are streamed and can be downloaded, but it was suggested by Robert to do as I do now. He's 'the man' that I listen to and follow here. I am not here to compete but to learn, enhance, and possibly inspire others. Again, thanks for the suggestion and i apologize for any inconvenience.

Many of us here use Box.com and they provide a free account. The nice thing about a file sharing solution is that they usually allows for just playing back the file, without having to download. Dropbox does the same thing basically.

There will be members who just want to listen without having to download, so I would say it's a good idea to do.
