Ivan's most excellent Hybrid Solo sent me to noodling some A7 rhythms, thinking about ways to add little pieces of chords to a standard blues.  I quickly ended up using the Jamman looper to build 24 bars of A7 progression with flavors and sprinkles on top.  I then copied the loop to another memory location and added a layer of guitar.  I then recorded the playback of each loop into GB to create a track with 24 bars of the basic rhythm track and then 24 with the 9ths added for a 48 bar backing track.  Here's the A7 Rhythm track:  A7 Looper Rhythm

Well, once it was on GB I figured a wee bit of solo, and to make contrast I launched into some old school with Billy Gibbons tone and pinch harmonics.  Nothing fancy but fun exercise.  The recording process will keep you on your toes and humble those that think they knows: A7 Looper w Solo

And just for fun because I liked the harmonics squeal on another take, here's a bare outtake from the cutting room floor of Deep C Studios: Solo Outtake

Many thanks to my fellow Caballero, Ivan, for getting me back into the red light zone.

Hey Clayton, sounds like studio C has been pretty busy. Love the rhythm tracks you layered and the solo you put over top of the second recording. You're the master of GB here on MGA.

I especially like the 3rd commando solo on it's own. Don't know how you get the pinch harmonics but it sounds really cool along with the cool tone. Well done my friend. I knew studio C would be buzzing! Keep em coming Clayton!

Good Times, Brother, glad you liked the outtake, too.

Pinch harmonics:  Choke up on the pick and let some of your thumb hit the string right behind the pick stroke.  You have to be on a harmonic spot on the neck (easy spots are 5th, 7th and 12th frets but there are many more) and it really helps to be on the bridge pickup.

I'm working Watchtower today but that thumb over grip is not happening.  Sigh, mere mortals...

I'll need to work on that. I knew the technical side on how to get a pinch harmonic. I just can't get it to work. The odd time I can hear myself doing it but it's totally by accident. I always thought you had to be playing through a tube amp to get the effect. Are you using tube or solid state on this recording?

I'm using the Blackstar HT-5R on clean with some Fulltone OCD pushing it in front.  The HT5R which is very simple but tube.  A tube may make it easier but I definitely pulled some of those with the Mustang III in British Amp model.  Just push the gain a bit into breaking up and let your thumb graze the string.  Play with the pick real close to your flesh and hit the string with a little attitude.

Funny, I was always hitting harmonics cause I was using light picks and holding them close the the striking edge.

Thanks Clayton. You know, now that you mention it, I think that's how I hit my PH. Just by  brushing the string with my pick after I hit the note.....I can feel it.

Hmmmm.....something to experiment with.

I like this jam ... I've been listening to a lot of Grateful Dead lately and this sure reminds me of Garcia and Weir noodling ...  Live in Cornell 1977.

nice

Definitely has some Jerry and Bob in it- glad you liked it T.  Some of my former bandmates would have us cover a couple Dead classics as a jam foundation.  I was fortunate enough to see the Dead with Jerry in DC in 93 or 95, but some details remain a bit foggy.

Ithaca, now that's a good spot and time to see such a show.
