I just picked up the Jimmy Reed Anthology (2 cds) and what a goldmine of blues foundations. Jimmy Reed's name always comes up as a key influence with players, but I just finished two books: Texas Flood and Light and Shade Conversations with Jimmy Page. Both Stevie and Page leaned heavily on Jimmy Reed's playing as a bedrock foundation of blues playing and feel.
So I sat down with the Anthology and just played along. Light bulbs all over my head with that Jimmy Reed style, and suddenly I have a much better perspective and growing skills to execute those shuffles and accompanying riffs that our modern Blues Rock Gods incorporated as their repertoire.
Give Jimmy Reed tunes a try, listen deeply, and grab your axe.
You'll know it in a heartbeat. Triplet feel, shuffles, boogie, and classic riffs.
The Anthology was a bargain and sound quality good for the era.
Next up- Jimmy Page was heavy into Otis Rush - I can't quit you, babe. And Hubert Sumlin backing up Howlin Wolf.
And smokin rhythms and burning solos on this recent live show. Check out the song starting at 31:48
sweet stuff. Just wonderful
I can't get enough of Jimmy Reed live or studio! This old Cat is swinging some serious blues riffs. We are so fortunate to have one of that blues generation among us.
