Hi just joined up having been through a couple of Robert's free lessons. Am a classically trained violinists since the age of 11 but also been fascinated by the guitar all my life. Currently also have guitar lessons from a very good teacher at home and just want to explore music in a different way - less formal. Started learning some standards and Latin numbers . But my teacher recommended getting some blues under my belt in order to just be able to pick up the instrument and jam. Improvisation has always interested me. Can it be taught ?? or is it more a journey of discovery. Guess you need to put in the mileage. Really looking forward to the lessons. Been playing off and on for 10 years. Now aged 62.

Hello James and welcome to MGA!

You sound like a very musical person with a very broad taste in music. I am sure you will enjoy hanging out here at MGA! Surely there will be lots to learn as well.

Dig in and have fun!

James,

Welcome! Are you near Heyward's Heath?

I'm only 3 or 4 years older than you and began playing guitar just about 3.5 years ago. But I was classically trained in piano (with some jazz, too).

Southport is nice. Be well.

Improvisation: 99% perspiration, 1% inspiration!  Well, I think the inspiration arises from the beauty of trial and error.  Embrace the open to interpretation structure of blues- it's about conveying a feeling that is universally received but unique to each performer.  Work hard but don't take it too seriously.  This music arises from the toil and persistence of a people who reach into themselves and find the essence of survival in the face of overwhelming hardship.

I would think a classical performer would have many tools at his disposal to make the guitar sing.

Hi James, a warm welcome to you!

I hope I can help you guys get better at improvisation. I have more material on this coming down the pipeline.

One of the best ways to start is to try it on a video and submit it as a Student Focus video, because then I can give you specific guidance.
