This a great site. Love it to bits, and it's fun too!
My story is a bit like many I suppose. Left school, went to the army for six years and found the blues and rock, courtesy of a guy called Hendrix. After the military I somehow ended up as a professor at a metropolitan university (boy, did I fool them) and what with kids and work never really had the time (or so I told myself) to learn to play. Ended up that my wife of twenty something years got sick of me and threw me out. So I took an early retirement, moved away from the city and got a guitar teacher. He was great and I learnt a lot, but then he had to move for family reasons, which left me a bit high and dry.
Never mind, I bought myself an old ES335 (certified by the factory). That made me feel better. Collection has grown a bit since then and wife number 2 calls it my addiction.
My Dad was a violinist and a licentiate of Trinity College in London. My eldest son was conservatory trained in percussion, mainly vibraphone. Unfortunately, in my case the talent skipped a generation! It is a hard slog but the journey is what matters to me.
The major problem I have now is training my metronome. I find that when I start playing a piece it keeps losing the timing but the more I play it that piece, the better it is at getting it right. Weird. Maybe it knows that its predecessor committed suicide by hurling itself at a wall!

Hello Nigel and welcome to MGA. I think you will have fun and enjoy hanging around here... also learn a bunch of guitar playing too, I expect.
Good luck training that metronome. Some of them can be real stubborn!
Nigel, I too would like to welcome you here at MGA.
I really appreciate your message: «Unfortunately, in my case the talent skipped a generation! It is a hard slog but the journey is what matters to me.»
I can only agree with you 👍.
Enjoy your journey here,
Birgit
Welcome Nigel! Have a great playing fun here!
"Time is kinda funny"....The Gunslinger. Hey, somewhere along the line you do set your own signature to lay over the time stamp.. Mr Hendrix indulged in such escapades all over Axis.
Welcome to the MGA.
Welcome, Nigel! I love your introduction. Glad to have you here.
Those metronomes need to be taught a lesson. Show it who's boss.
Time is so important in music. Is there anything specific I can help with regarding this?
I recommend practicing clapping exercises as shown in this video. Once you get that, do it with your guitar, using a pick and one note. Then do it while playing through a scale. Be creative. 🙂
Very interesting video. Thanks. I think I will fill in some spare moments doing these exercises! Thanks!
