Hi,
I am a Jazz/Fusion player that is interested in becoming a proficient improviser. I have been tasked by private instructor to get more Blues language into my vocabulary since it's foundational to any genre of music you play. I was watching Scott Henderson's "Jazz Rock Mastery" and he said something very profound: "you don't want to be a boring Jazz guy that just plays 8th notes on the changes. I'd rather hear Albert King drop his guitar and kick it across the stage than to listen to those boring Jazz guys. Don't be a boring Jazz guy". And so, here I am......
Welcome aboard, Smitty. I can assure you, that there is a lot to discover to expand your blues vocabulary.
I can’t imagine, however, that your jazz playing should be boring. If you like, I would appreciate it very much, if you could share some jazzy sounds with us here at the forum.
Enjoy learning and playing,
Birgit
@motor_city_smitty, Welcome! The invocation of Scott Henderson is good mojo. Robert definitely has a good bend on blues that you can take to jazz fusion.
Any favorite tunes or artists?
@clayton - Scott Henderson is obviously a favorite of mine. I actually did a private lesson with him for an hour earlier this month, talk about drinking from the firehose! My favs are Scott, Allan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale, Guthrie Govan, Pat Metheny, Wes Montgomery. There's a huge list of players I like but these guys are the ones I am studying right now.
@motor_city_smitty Did you catch the Pay Metheny interview on Rick Beato's YT channel? Great conversation.
That lesson with Henderson would have made my head explode!
Well, please partake and maybe share some recordings of what you learn here. And frankly, the more unpolished the better, it helps all of us experience the learning curve and aha moments. We are a judgement free zone at the MGA.
@clayton Will do. I have a fair number of things I record. I try to do it for personal assessment of where I am at and can be more objective. I am an extremely harsh critic of myself, maybe too harsh.

Where are we supposed to be posting videos?

Exactly, most of us tend to be far too critical to look in the mirror and take a pat on the back for what we have accomplished. Growth can look or sound a bit awkward but we need not be so hard on ourselves. I'm loving the videos.
Welcome, @motor_city_smitty!
I am a big fan of Scott Henderson too. I'm also doing a lesson with him soon!
We have similar favs and it sounds like you are an accomplished player already. Most of my material is beginner to intermediate, although I have some more advanced stuff too. I'd say have a look at Stout Blues and see if you like. Maybe check out Bb Blues too https://www.masterguitaracademy.com/course/b-flat-blues-yam-bb01/
