We have a music store in town that is mostly a piano lesson place but carries a small selection of guitar books, some guitars and accessories. I buy my strings there mostly. Did buy an Epiphone acoustic there once. So I stopped buy with a little bit of money in my pockets. Came out with this stuff.
8's! I switched my American Tele to 8's after pondering Billy Gibbons' recommendation for using light strings. Has not affected tone, and man they are easy on the hands.

Seriously, guitar players say they loose tone, but I never felt so. I even use 8 's on my acoustic guitars. Now the sharpness may have a little less punch to them, but if you put a pickup on the acoustic, you got some great tone coming out. And yes, I have 8's on my Telecaster also.
When I started working on bending I switched a couple (few?) guitars to 9's. Everything else still has 10's. Definitely easier on the bending. But I'm not sure I hear any change/loss in tone. My original thought was after I get some finger strength built up and made some progress on the bending I would go back to 10's. Now I'm not sure that I will.
I remember hearing at some point how SRV had such thick strings for the tone. Maybe at some point I'll try 12's or even thicker just to see if there really is that much difference. But not anytime soon.
