LES PAUL’S NUMBER ONE GUITAR SET FOR AUCTION AT CHRISTIE’S
""Gibson Les Pauls don’t come much more iconic than this. The Goldtop known as Les Paul’s number one and heavily modified by the electric guitar pioneer himself will be up for grabs as part of Christie’s Exceptional Sale in New York on 13 October 2021.
The 1952 Goldtop, which made its television debut on the Omnibus show in October 1953, is being sold by Les Paul’s audio-engineer son Gene and Tom Doyle, the guitar-builder, engineer and producer who worked alongside Les for over 45 years."
On CBS News this morning they reported that Christie's expects the sale to bring around $150,000. I think, given all the recent guitars we have seen selling at auction, David Gilmour's black Strat as an example, this is grossly underestimating. What do you think?
I say at least 7 digits.
Ron, I think you're right on with that value. 150k???????
How on Earth.
I think they put the price low to get buyers within the 150000 to 300000 dollars to start bidding.
Its hard at the moment what the guitar will pan out with, but my guess it won't be much more then the top of 300000 dollars.
Times are really tough at the moment. Vintage Guitars - Fine Fretted Instruments Since 1970 | Gruhn Guitars Is getting a lot of people wanting estimates at the moment and if you get their news letter you'll see that there is a very big increase of newly listed guitars for sale every time you get their list.
Although I mostly Martins listed, they have some Gibson guitars but other then a few classics, most seem to be saying " here I am, buy me today ".
With Nashville finally opening up, more people will be working, but inflation now around the country is between 5% and 27% , depending which side of the isle you are in.
Personally, after the price which may exceed 300000 dollars the bidding war may hit some silent times.
The EC guitar that went up for auction was unusual , but he was still alive and performing.
Les Paul left a legend with the older generation, maybe not so much with the young generation.
I actually see some European and Asians pulling this one through.$930,000 is, of course, a great deal of money for a guitar, though Les Paul's Les Paul did not reach the highest of high prices recently garnered from other high-profile guitar auctions

Don't know who the buy was though.
Was wrong on my estimate. Good for his son that it sold at that price.
I guess Robert didn't bid ?
Yep, I was thinking 1 million. C'mon, this is the first block of Amino Acids in the primordial soup!
